Understanding Madeira's Unique Hazards

Reef & Rock Bottom

Almost every significant surf spot in Madeira has a reef or boulder bottom. Unlike sand, these surfaces:

Don't move: Hitting reef at speed causes serious injuries

Are sharp: Volcanic rock cuts easily, even through wetsuits

Are shallow: Many breaks have sections where the reef is exposed

Strong Currents

North Atlantic swells generate powerful water movement:

Rip currents are present at most spots

Tidal currents can be disorienting
