Beginner Spots
Porto da Cruz (Alagoa & Maiata) hosts regional championships, has lifeguards and multiple schools - the obvious first stop. Machico's pebble break works in cleaner swells. Sandy-bottom beach breaks where falling stays cheap.

Intermediate Spots
Fajã da Areia is the honest step up - black-sand beach break, low tide, small W/NW swell, nothing under you but sand. Ponta Pequena rewards the walk with long right-hand rides once you can read a point. Porto da Cruz on a bigger day is the third option, and often the right one.

Jardim do Mar (cult right-point), Paul do Mar (boulder-bottom), Ponta Pequena (long paddle from Paul do Mar, or a boulder scramble), Ribeira da Janela (rare left). World-class on the right NW swell - but Jardim's 2010 seawall changed how the wave breaks at low tide. Read the chapter before paddling out.
