Madeira Surf Seasons + Swell
Madeira's surf is highly seasonal. Beginner-friendly windows in summer, serious NW swells in winter. Below: which months work for which level and which spots.

Winter (Oct-Mar) — pumping
- Swell: persistent NW Atlantic groundswell, 4-15ft+ regularly
- Water temp: 17-19°C — 4/3mm full wetsuit minimum
- Air temp: 16-21°C
- Best for: intermediate-to-advanced surfers chasing point breaks
- Best spots: Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Ribeira da Janela
- Worst for: beginners (most days too big at most spots)
Spring shoulder (Apr-May) — sweet spot
- Swell: winter swells fade, smaller cleaner days more frequent
- Water temp: 18-19°C — 3/2mm
- Best for: all levels — beginners get rideable days, intermediates progress, advanced still get scoring days
- Best spots: Porto da Cruz, Machico, Madalena, Fajã da Areia
Summer (Jun-Sep) — flat with windows
- Swell: mostly small (1-4ft), occasional summer S/SW pulses
- Water temp: 21-23°C — shorty wetsuit or just trunks/swim
- Air temp: 22-28°C
- Best for: beginners and first-timers wanting warm-water learning
- Best spots: Porto da Cruz, Machico, Seixal
- Worst for: advanced — most days too small at point breaks
Autumn shoulder (Oct-Nov) — hero window
- Swell: first solid NW swells of the season, lighter crowds than peak winter
- Water temp: 20-22°C — 3/2mm
- Best for: intermediates and advanced — clean conditions before winter chaos
- Best spots: all of them
